More than just another blood-'n-guts memoir, Norm Berg's MY CARRIER WAR is a detailed account of carrier pilots and their planes, an engaging love story and a courageous examination of a young man's battle with--and eventual victory over--fear and self-doubt.

On December 7, 1941, the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor. Three days later, a young Navy pilot-in-training won his wings and soon found himself flying torpedo planes against enemy targets in the Pacific. From his days as a naval aviation cadet aboard the "Yellow Peril" biplane trainer, to his first bombing runs on Guadalcanal, to his life aboard an aircraft carrier in the South Pacific, Norman Berg offers a fast-paced narrative filled with humor and meticulous attention to detail.

Much more than a simple WWII memoir, this story goes beyond the action of battle to explore the author's innermost conflicts and chronicles one young couple's wartime struggle to balance love, duty, and commitment.

My Carrier War eBook Norman E Berg

I was disappointed. There is a truly great story here. I feel bad the author didn't have better advise and direction about how to tell his important, life-altering story.

The first five of this nine chapter book are fairly interesting. The author describes quite nicely his experiences during flight training.

His subsequent assignment to Ferry Command is interesting and clearly demonstrated the difference between a pilot who is "trained" and a pilot who is "experienced."

The last four chapters cover his combat experience.

It illustrates the dichotomy between an ill equipped navy at the beginning of the war and the well equipped navy able to end it. I was fascinated with his experiences in during the Typhone! I wish he would have expanded on his experience as a squadron operations officer.

The author's description of how he met and married his wife were enlightening and entertaining. It added to the flavor of the book in a humanizing way. After the marriage, I was surprised to learn about author's sex life and his wife's diaphragm. Some of it is a little steamy and didn't fit well with the narrative of "My Carrier War."

The cover lead me to believe I would be reading about a fighter pilot. It has a picture of an F4U Corsair. The author flew TBM's and TBF's while performing bombing and torpedo missions. Each of these aircraft were important to the ultimate victory in the Pacific and just as dangerous to fly in combat. Why not a picture of a TBF on the cover? It's a gorgeous aircraft and just as exciting.

My Carrier War eBook Norman E Berg Reviews

The books about all the great heros of WWII have been written and read. This book looks at the more typical experience of the young men of that time. While most would aspire to great deeds, the fact is, you only get to deal with what you are presented with by fate or luck. This book illustrates that kind of experience. While not an easy time for Mr. Berg, it is a tale more typical of the majority of Navy pilots in the Pacific. Action, yes, of course, great heroics, no, just the heroics of the day to day tensions of men flying frail craft off of ships at sea, braving anti-aircraft fire, and trying to return to ships they hoped were still there and whose location they hoped was correctly figured on their kneepad notes.
The blurbs about this book are accurate. It's a story of how Norm Berg became a torpedo bomber pilot but it also includes many intimate details of his relationship with his wife. He flies in harm's way and worries about the next mission while in the theater. He also makes a few errors in judgement in his personal life while on leave - fortunately with no long term consequences. As others have mentioned, Norm flies torpedo bombers ( a TBM toward the end of the war ) but he still shoots down a kamikaze on its way to attack the US fleet. The cover of the book is misleading as they should have put a picture of a TBM or one of the planes that Norm actually flew on the cover. The corsair is very dramatic looking, but Norm doesn't even mention them in this book.
This book is an honest account of Berg's journey to become a US Navy carrier-based attack pilot during WWII. We follow him right from school through training and eventual deployment aboard Navy aircraft carriers operating in the Pacific theater against the Japanese. Throughout all of this, he has a young wife at home and a baby on the way, so this adds an additional stress to his tour.
Berg's first tour of duty involves operations around the Solomon Island chain (Guadalcanal, etc.) where he gets his baptism of fire and first real experiences of the unique challenges and horrors of war. After a stint back in the USA, he is redeployed on another carrier and this time is involved in action along the Marianas Islands, including the famous "Marianas Turkey Shoot". After this the push continues on to the Philippines where Berg leads raids right into Manilla Harbour.
The book is fairly well written and it doesn't appear to have had any serious editorial input which I really liked as the story remains more 'real' to me. Written in a style that is quite conservative and with well-chosen words, unlike the Vietnam War era Chickenhawk (the best war memoir I've read) which is a bit more gritty but I still found it to be a compelling read which many times had me feeling like I was there with him in his Avenger bomber at 200 feet racing toward a Japanese ship under heavy anti-aircraft fire. One aspect of the text that a liked a lot was the regular insertion of what appear to be snippets from his wartime diary that gave me further insights into his thoughts and moods.
Overall a very good book that I would recommend to anyone, whether they be interested in war stories or not. A great story of fear, doubt, courage, tribulation, triumph and love. Well worth the purchase. Top stuff.
This read left me wishing for better. The author, a naval combat pilot, by his own account, seems selfish and self centered in his personal conduct. His wife was a saint for putting up with him.

The book just ends when his ship is sent home for repairs. It would have added a lot to have the account take us to the end of the war. It would have also been a plus to have to hear how his life has gone since the end of WWII.

Finally, the book needs better editing. Words are misspelled, in other cases the wrong word is used, and the tense of verbs is not what it should be.

I am glad I made the effort to read this, but sorry it wasn't a more professional job.
My son recommended this book and I was very pleased to read it. It's about the life of Norman E. Berg, an American hero pilot in WWII. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and sadly learned Navy Captain Berg passed away in February 2015. He and his family led a Patriotic life. His youngest son was an Army aviator in Vietnam who tragically lost his life at age 25 in 1971 while flying a MACV-SOG mission as a huey helicopter pilot. A tragedy at best. Reading this book was very personal for me. My Father was in WWII in the D-Day invasion and survived to become an aviator. I was in Vietnam in 1972 and survived unlike Captain Berg's son. A great book that documents WWII from a Navy aviators perspective!
